Man robbed Satellite Beach credit union to pay for Disney cruise, police say
A 37-year-old North Carolina man was charged with carrying out a beachside credit union robbery after police say he told investigators he felt “pressured” to fulfill a promise to buy Disney cruise tickets for his girlfriend’s children.
Satellite Beach police said the man, identified as Cedrick Royce Swinson, and his girlfriend drove overnight to Brevard County to take the cruise when he discovered the cash for his final payment on the tickets was not available for withdrawal.
“He claimed he had money in the bank but that he couldn’t get access to it or that they had a hold on it,” said Cmdr. Brad Hodge of the Satellite Beach Police Department. “He said he felt pressured to follow through with his promise to take (the girlfriend and her two children) on a Disney cruise and decided to rob the credit union.”
The robbery happened about 10:40 a.m. at the Navy Federal Credit Union in the Atlantic Shopping Plaza at and Scorpion Lane and A1A in Satellite Beach, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.
Satellite Beach police, alerted by a bank alarm, and deputies from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office responded within minutes.
Witnesses told police that the robber walked into the bank and passed a note demanding cash and implied he had a weapon.
Hodge said Swinson then left the building and got into a white sport utility vehicle with his girlfriend and her 11- and 6-year-old children inside.
Satellite Beach located the SUV about five minutes later and conducted a traffic stop as it rode along the westbound lane of the Pineda Causeway. Officers, with weapons drawn, then took Swinson into custody.
Police also questioned the girlfriend but do not believe she knew of Swinson’s plan.
“She was horrified and the children were upset. They drove here overnight from Charlotte for a cruise. They didn’t know he was going to do this,” Hodge said.
Swinson was taken to the Brevard County Jail Complex where he was booked on robbery, grand theft and driving on a suspended license charge, records show.
