Manhunt nabs would-be boat engine thieves, Brevard deputies say
Two men learned the hard way that it’s difficult to hide from a helicopter with an infrared camera.
Local 6 News partner Florida Today reports Brevard County sheriff’s deputies caught the pair trying to steal two outboard boat engines at a Atlantic Self Storage on U.S. 1 in Melbourne, according to a news release.
At about 10 p.m. Sunday, deputies went to the self-storage facility to find a burglary in progress. They found two men working to strip outboard boat motors worth about $10,000 each, according to a release.
The pair tried to escape but were caught by deputies after a manhunt. Video obtained by Florida Today shows a deputy tackling one man after a brief foot chase. Meanwhile, the second suspect hides behind an RV while deputies surround him. The second suspect soon surrenders.
Deputies arrested Elio Enrique Lleo Mayea, 49, and Jorge Luis Cabrera, 33. Mayea is from Hialeah, and Cabrera is from Palm Bay. Police documents show both men were charged with burglary, grand theft, and possession of burglary tools.
Investigators believe the pair traveled from the Miami area to Brevard several times to conduct surveillance of potential burglary targets. They believe the men may be connected to similar outboard motor thefts at Atlantic Self Storage.
