Here's how law enforcement officers in Central Florida are going the extra mile

First responders in Orlando area go beyond call of duty

ORLANDO, Fla. – Each week on News 6 at Nine, News 6 likes to share some good news about Orlando-area first responders.

This week, five local agencies in Central Florida shared heartwarming stories on social media.

Orlando police officers were working to make the holidays safer and more fun for everyone by getting out on their bikes to remind members of the community to lock their doors and hide their valuables while shopping the big Black Friday sales. 

Kissimmee officers showed their gratitude ahead of Thanksgiving by thanking their community partner, the Boys and Girls Club of Central Florida, for helping them put on a flag football game. The police department posted pictures of the friendly competition on its Twitter, telling the pros to watch out, because those guys were pretty good.

What's better than story time and horses? Orange County deputies aren't making children choose. Instead, they're teaching students the magic of both through the Tales Literacy Project, which allows them to visit by horseback for a good read.

In Lake County, volunteers with the county's Senior Watch program went to visit their oldest member, 102-year-old "Miss Bessie," to celebrate her birthday. Miss Bessie, who is one of the 200 seniors they check on daily, looked ecstatic to have them stop by for her big day.

Students in Seminole County had some fun in the classroom when deputies took part in the county's annual Teach In event, which allows members of the Seminole County Sheriff's Office and others in the community to be the students' teacher for a day. Pictures posted online show many interested students during various lessons at Joan Walker Elementary School. Who knows, there could be some future law enforcement officers in there.
