Among talks of a new stadium for downtown, Orlando may get a Major League Soccer team as soon as the end of this summer.
Mayor Buddy Dyer told a local sports radio host that the city is hoping to get county funding for a stadium within the next few weeks.
He said a franchise could be awarded during the summer.
"It's the world's most popular sport married with the world's leading tourist destination, so I can't think of a better mix," Dyer said.
Orlando's minor league soccer team, the Lions, could also be seeing some excitement this summer in hosting a U.S. Open Cup semifinal match at the Citrus Bowl in August. Supporters hope this will bring the team, and the sport, more visibility than ever.
