ORLANDO, Fla. -

An Orlando Police Department K-9 was hurt during the arrest of a burglary suspect, who attempted to drown the dog in a pond.

Landon Barnes, 18, has been charged with burglary, injuring a police dog and resisting arrest in the Thursday afternoon incident.

Police said Barnes was spotted by resident Barbara Sills burglarizing her home at the Audubon Place City Condominiums on Plaza Terrace Boulevard at 1 p.m.

"I came into the house and I was in my kitchen and I hear my bedroom door slam," Sills said. "And I looked and saw the kid running across my backyard and I ran after him. So I'm screaming 'That guy just broke into my house!  Grab him!'"

Sills chased Barnes out of her home and tried to grab him on her own, but lost him.

When police arrived to the lake area behind the complex, Barnes was trying to conceal himself in the water. When the K-9, Seabee, went to apprehend Barnes, Barnes attempted to submerge Seabee under the water.

Landon Barnes Barnes was arrested by the officer.

"I'm glad they got him 'cause I'd hate to see him get away after all that chasing I did," Sills said. "And that dog was able to finish off the project I started."

Seabee began to convulse and was taken to a veterinarian for treatment.

Seabee is 2 1/2 years old and has been on OPD for 1 1/2 years. He was released from the animal hospital on Friday but has a high fever and there is potential for infections. Seabee and his handler Officer Tim Stanley are off-duty for the next three days.

Barnes told police that he was drinking water from the woman's hose when she came home.

He was taken to Orange County jail on $5,300 bond.
