A 89-year-old woman suffered serious injuries, including a puncture bite behind her ear, Thursday morning when she was mauled by a pit bull mix in Geneva.
The dog attack occurred around 10 a.m. along 1st Street. Investigators found the neighbor's dog, Kira, may have bit the victim, according to Seminole County officials.
Seminole County Fire Rescue officials said Betty Meitzler suffered severe bite wounds to her skull, arm, legs and neck, adding that she suffered "massive tissue loss." She was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center in serious condition.
Seminole County Animal Services took possession of the dog, described as a 3-year-old spayed pit bull-lab mix. She was named dangerous by the Animal Control Authority in April and was allowed to return home after being declared as "Dangerous" under Florida Statute 767.12. The dog owner was educated about the requirements to keep a dangerous dog and complied with the certificate of registration for a dangerous dog and paid all applicable fees, according to Seminole County officials.
Meitzler's grandson tells Local 6 the dog attacked his mother last month and sent her to the hospital.
It's not known what prompted the attack.
"Animal Services is continuing to investigate the bite to determine if Kira was the dog involved in the incident. The owner has surrendered Kira to Animal Services," according to a release from Seminole County officials. "Kira is now being observed and cared for at the Seminole County Animal Shelter."
