Authorities say a small plane that departed from Merritt Island crashed outside of Tifton in south Georgia, killing one person.

David Haire with the Tift County Sheriff's Department says officers received a 911 call shortly after 10 a.m. Friday. Deputies responded to the crash site, which is in an open field in the unincorporated community of Chula.

Haire says first responders found the body of one person and have secured the scene for investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board. The person's identity has not been released.

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said in an email the Piper PA-28 had departed Merritt Island and was headed to LaGrange-Callaway Airport in La Grange, Ga.
