PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -

A St. Lucie Mets player remains in jail following his arrest on charges of shoplifting, battery and resisting a police officer without violence.

Port St. Lucie police officers responded to Bealls Department Store on Sunday afternoon for a shoplifting call. The store's loss prevention officer told police he saw 21-year-old Alex Romero taking clothes from the rack, removing the price tags and taking pictures of the items with his cell phone.

A police report says employees tried to stop Romero as he left the store. He's accused of punching the loss prevention officer and then slamming his head into the concrete.

Officers saw Romero fleeing as they arrived. They pursued him. He resisted arrest by pulling away and yelling.

Police say the stolen property was inside his backpack.
