Brevard County's sheriff says a man killed by deputies outside of the courthouse on Friday was armed with a pellet gun.
Robert Striffler was shot and killed after a 3-hour standoff in the parking lot of the courthouse in Viera.
Striffler had been holding the weapon during the standoff. Investigators say members of the SWAT team had no choice but to open fire because Striffler became aggressive and attempts to take him into custody with non-lethal weapons did not work.
Monday night, Sheriff Wayne Ivey revealed the gun Striffler had was an airsoft pistol that only shoots pellets. But, Ivey says the pistol had been modified, and the orange tip put on the gun to alert people it's not a real had been removed.
Two SWAT team members that fired the fatal shots are on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
