Drivers were urged to use caution near State Road 528 in Cocoa Tuesday morning because of heavy smoke from a brush fire.
The fire first started on one side of SR 528 in the Grissom Parkway area, which was closed for nearly two hours Monday evening due to smoke.
At some point, burning embers hopped the highway and landed in several back yards. Neighbors said three houses were evacuated for several hours.
"It was so close. We smelled it and the saw the ash and everything earlier today and then the smoke just got bigger and bigger and bigger and I saw it in this guy's back yard," said Tommi Baker, who lives in the area.
Fire officials monitored the smoldering brush overnight for potential hot spots.
