Starbucks begins selling beer, wine at night
Rejoice wine lovers: Starbucks baristas will now be doubling as bartenders.
Beer and wine are now on the menu at select Starbucks locations, and Bloomberg Businessweek reports that the alcoholic additions will be coming to thousands of locations during the next few years.
The program, called Starbucks Evenings, begins at 4 p.m. with beer and wine selections that vary to meet “local taste preferences,” a Starbucks spokesperson said. Alcohol sales have already begun in Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Portland, Ore., and Washington, D.C.
Small plates including bacon-wrapped dates and truffle macaroni and cheese will also be available to pair with the beers and wines.
Chief Operating Officer Troy Alstead told Bloomberg News that the new menu items have proven to produce a “meaningful increase in sales during that time of the day.”
Patrons should expect to be carded, and employees serving alcohol must be at least 21 years old. However, Starbucks plans to maintain its family-friendly café atmosphere.
According to its website, beverages will still be picked up from the baristas, though patrons can expect a less-hurried atmosphere after 4 p.m.
