'Stealth juror' files civil rights complaint against George Zimmerman attorney
A potential juror who was dismissed during jury selection in the George Zimmerman murder trial has filed a formal complaint, saying his civil rights were violated by lead defense attorney Mark O'Mara.
Jerry Counelis was escorted from the Seminole County Courthouse on Friday, two days after being dismissed as a prospective juror.
Later Friday, O'Mara accused Counelis of being a "stealth juror" and said Counelis potentially could have tainted the jury pool.
Counelis said O'Mara defamed him and the courthouse ban is unfair.
The Florida Civil Rights Association said on Monday that it is providing Counelis with legal representation. The group is calling on O'Mara to apologize and says it it will be closely monitoring the trial to ensure everyone's rights are protected.
O'Mara told Local 6 News that he may issue a response as early as Wednesday.
Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defense.
