Theme World: Avatar & Star Wars Hints
Greetings from Theme World. Though, truth be told, all of the information today is coming out of Anaheim, CA where the D23 Expo has kicked off. Some 45,000 Disney Fanatics are expected to deluge the Anaheim Convention Center over 3 Days.
Disney is promising no ANNOUNCEMENTS of new attractions. And I believe them. I hear things are still in flux for what's coming to Walt Disney World.
However, Disney did also promise HINTS to Avatarland for Animal Kingdom -- and new Star Wars attractions (including at least one rumored for Hollywood Studios).
Well --- here are the hints.
Let's start with Avatar. The best single hint is staring right at guests.
That still of blinking eyes was tweeted to me. However, the Stitch Kingdom website has video of it moving (embedded below) and here's a link to their article on what an imagineer told their webmaster about the eyes.
The rest of the images you will see in this article come from our good friends at Attractions Magazine. And I urge all of you to follow their coverage all weekend from their web site, Twitter feed and YouTube channel.
Disney's Imagineers have set up a fake office from their Avatar planning team.
You can see lots of props that seem like they came straight from the movie, and (below) sketches of what may be concept art or a storyboard for an attraction.
The imagineer on duty is claiming he just came back from a research trip to Pandora.
Now let's move on to the subtler hint about Star Wars. There are several boxes with "Orange Harvest" stamped on them. Blue Harvest was a code name for Return of the Jedi -- and both Disney resorts in the U.S. are in Orange Counties.
People are tweeting that there are blueprints in the box above that have what appears to be the speeder bikes from Return of the Jedi. And I hear that a speeder bike coaster is being considered for both Disneyland's Tomorrowland and WDW's Hollywood Studios.
Hopefully I can bring you more on both projects soon.
There's one other big WDW display worth a look.
If you have suffered through the parking woes at Downtown Disney due to closed parking lots -- here's the reason why.
That enormous parking garage is one of two going up that will allow the complex to double in size and become Disney Springs.
Above -- the view towards the Marketplace from the slightly modified Planet Hollywood.
Here's Attraction Magazine's video tour of the whole Imagineering display.
And here's a link to my recent article on construction on Disney Springs.
Keep your emails, questions, and comments coming! I always appreciate the feedback.
See you in the parks!
