SARASOTA, Fla. -

A third-grader brought a loaded gun to a Sarasota elementary school, keeping the pistol in his backpack until another student alerted a teacher.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported that the incident happened Wednesday at Brentwood Elementary, a school of about 610 students.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office reports that the student took the .22 caliber pistol from the home of his mother's friend. The boy showed the weapon to two other boys at school. One of the kids told school officials and they confiscated the gun.

The sheriff's office and the Department of Children and Families are investigating the incident.

Bringing a weapon to school is considered a level three incident on a scale of four and is punished with an out-of-school suspension or possible expulsion, according the student handbook.
