Toddler found wandering in traffic; Palm Bay woman arrested
A 22-year-old Palm Bay babysitter was arrested after a toddler was found wandering in traffic, according to police.
Misty Rae Diffin was arrested Thursday on felony charges of child neglect.
According to Palm Bay police, a witness called authorities around 4:20 p.m. to report that an unattended toddler had wandered onto Dixie Highway as cars were driving by.
The woman said she got out of her vehicle to remove the child from the roadway as she called 911, according to police.
After several minutes, she said another woman, later identified as Diffin, arrived and tried to take the child, according to police, who said the witness was reluctant to turn the child over but didn't know what else she could do.
Police contacted Diffin who said she was asked by the child's mother to watch the child while the mother worked. Diffin said she had worked overnight at Walmart but agreed to watch the toddler, according to police.
Diffin said she fell asleep while sitting outside her apartment and the child wandered off, according to police. It's not known how long the child was unattended.
Diffin was arrested and taken to jail.
