Police, fire officials and the state fire marshal are searching for a person of interest in several suspected arson cases in Sanford.

An Orange County woman was arrested on Tuesday after deputies say she left a child alone and tied to a door with a belt.

Neftaldy Escarment, 25, was charged with child neglect after deputies say she left two children in a fenced-in area of the home barefoot, where there were metal objects and hazardous materials, while she went to work.

The children were discovered when a worker from Rent-A-Center went to the home at around 4:15 p.m. to discuss an account and heard the children inside, but no one answered the door.

One of the children, who was estimated to be 5 years old, had two belts tied together,  wrapped around the child's ankle and tied to the door handle of the sliding glass door, deputies said. The child appeared to have dark circles around the child's ankles as if something had been consistently wrapped around them, according to the report.

Deputies said the younger child, who was estimated to be around 2 years old, had a full diaper and one sock and a T-shirt on. The child was not tied to anything and was left to roam free in the apartment, which deputies said had bags full of trash, a pan of grease and harmful chemicals in the children's reach.

According to the report, Escarment arrived at the home after 5 p.m. and appeared to have no emotion, telling deputies that she was at work and didn't have any way to contact the children. She bathed the children while the investigation was ongoing, deputies said, but when one of the children wanted to be picked up, Escarment brushed the child aside and walked away.

It's not clear how long the children were left alone.

Escarment was booked into Orange County Jail on $1,000 bond.
