SANFORD, Fla. -

Sanford police are investigating an attack outside of a church where the woman says she was sexually assaulted by a man.

Police said they were called to the Holy Cross Episcopal Church on Magnolia Avenue at around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday night.

The 40-year-old woman said she was walking near the church on her way home late last night when a man on a bike rode by. He said something to her and after she responded, the man started following her as she turned into the church breezeway, according to the police report.

Police said the man then beat her up severely and sexually assaulted her.

The man is described as a black male, 6 feet 3 inches tall wearing a white shirt and black jean shorts with a pair of eyeglasses on his head.

A witness told police he was sitting in his truck Tuesday night when he heard the woman screaming and saw a man with a similar description speed away on his bike.

The witness then said he went into the breezeway and found the woman clutching her bruised and bloodied face.
