NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -

Police hope newly-released security video that shows the aftermath of a crash that injured a single mother may help catch the driver who hit her and ran.

The crash happened on State Road 44 around 6 a.m. last Friday.

A store's security camera caught the crash, enough to show the truck and sparks flying as it dragged Shariema Smith's bike.

Smith was riding her bike to work when the truck hit her. Smith recalled flying over the front of the car then being tossed onto the pavement.

Smith has laid in a hospital bed ever since that crash and her medical bills are mounting. That's why her co-workers at Denny's have started collecting donations for the single mother of a 4-year-old child.

"She's in good spirits," said her manager Kevin Wheeler, who visited her in the hospital and said she's in pain, but grateful to be alive. "She got hit. The guy got out of the car, asked if she's alright. She said no and that she needs help."

But instead, the man drove off, leaving Smith with a broken neck and fractured pelvis. She fought through her injuries and crawled to the side of the road to avoid getting hit by another car. Injured and alone, she called 911 herself.

"I think that's wrong. They need to find him," said Wheeler. "It shouldn't have happened. It's a shame."

Smith said the driver was a white man in his 40s or 50s, and his truck was light blue and will likely have a lot of front-end damage.

If you have any information about the crash, call New Smyrna Beach police.
