The New Jersey Devils announced Tuesday that Martin Brodeur will be their starting goalie for their Oct. 3 season-opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It is not a surprise that the 41-year-old Brodeur was named the starter, but the goaltending situation has been a topic of discussion ever since the Devils acquired Cory Schneider from the Vancouver Canucks in June.

Brodeur has been New Jersey's starter since the 1994-95 season, but Schneider offers stiff competition.

On Monday, Schneider, 27, stopped all 22 shots he faced in the first two periods as the Devils beat the Rangers 2-1 in a preseason game.

Many in the crowd chanted Schneider's name.

Schneider spent the last few seasons sharing the Vancouver goaltending duties with Roberto Luongo.
