Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston is under investigation for an alleged sexual battery in December 2012.

Florida State and Winston's attorney confirmed Wednesday the investigation by the Tallahassee Police Department. Police officials refused to answer questions about the investigation.

Attorney Timothy Jansen said Winston hasn't yet been interviewed by police. He denied his client had done anything wrong.

Jansen said he hoped the case will be resolved quickly and that "Winston will be exonerated and he will be able to focus all his attention on academics and football."

Florida State on Wednesday released a statement about the incident.

"We are aware of a matter that was investigated by the Tallahassee Police Department almost a year ago. Because the investigation has not been closed by TPD, we cannot comment further at this time. We look forward to a speedy resolution of the issue. There is no change in Jameis Winston's status. Coach Jimbo Fisher and Jameis will be answering questions about football only until there is a resolution."

No other details have been released.

FSU is currently ranked No. 2 in the BCS standings and will likely play for the national championship if they win their remaining games.

Winston is considered by many to be the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy.
