Live power pole traps Polk County first responders during Hurricane Irma

Deputy, paramedic both return to help with Irma recovery efforts

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – Two Polk County first responders became trapped in a patrol car on Sunday night after a live power pole and electric lines fell on it.

The incident happened after they dropped off an elderly patient and were en route to north Lakeland. Polk County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Chris Lynn and Polk County Fire Rescue Paramedic James Tanner Schaill were driving from Lakeland Hills Boulevard near Robson Street.

 

The deputy and paramedic were trapped for two hours until electric utility crews were able to disconnect the lines Monday morning.


The two are off to continue to help with hurricane recovery efforts as Hurricane Irma passed through Central Florida overnight.
